An Amtrak train struck and killed 21-year-old Ellaryan Miller of Wendell on Tuesday in Clayton. Miller, a UNC Wilmington student completing a summer internship, was walking from her job on Main Street to her car on Front Street when she crossed the railroad tracks outside a marked crossing and stepped into the train’s path. Officials confirmed the incident was accidental, captured on video surveillance, and there were no injuries to the 200 passengers or crew onboard. Amtrak emphasized the dangers of trespassing on tracks and works with Operation Lifesaver to promote rail safety. This marks the second pedestrian fatality involving an Amtrak train near downtown Clayton in a month.
